National arts centre

Nestled at the heart of Canada’s capital, the National Arts Centre (NAC) stands as a beacon of cultural enrichment and artistic innovation. Esteemed for its commitment to excellence, the NAC showcases an eclectic array of performances that span theatre, music, and dance, reflecting both the nation’s traditions and its contemporary artistic pulse. As a pivotal cultural institution, the NAC not only stages world-class productions but also nurtures the talents of emerging artists across the country. With its majestic performances and educational initiatives, the National Arts Centre continues to inspire, challenge, and elevate the artistic dialogue in Canada.

As a graphic designer for the National Arts Centre, I created visual concepts that highlighted the variety of performances programs and campaigns, including seasonal showcases like the Christmas series and summer events. My responsibilities involved designing posters, web banners, and other promotional materials, ensuring each piece resonated with its intended audience. I also developed storyboards for promotional videos, helping maintain a consistent and engaging visual story across all platforms. This role allowed me to contribute significantly to how the NAC’s diverse offerings were presented and perceived.

Let's get
together

For the National Arts Centre’s “Let’s Get Together” summer programming, we wanted to capture the essence of community and the vibrant atmosphere of a summer evening in Ottawa. My approach involved designing visual materials that not only highlighted the array of performances but also invoked a feeling of togetherness and the joy of shared experiences. To achieve this, I developed a cohesive visual system that included posters, web banners, and storyboards for videos, each incorporating warm, inviting colors that mirrored the hues of a summer sunset. These designs were aimed at resonating with a diverse, all-age audience, emphasizing the communal spirit and the celebratory vibe of the season.

2024-2025
Season

For the 2025 season at the National Arts Centre, we decided to integrate the hexagonal shapes prevalent in the Centre’s architecture into a dynamic visual system for their marketing materials. The hexagon, a recurring motif inspired by the building’s design, symbolizes structure, connectivity, and energy—themes that resonate deeply with the NAC’s commitment to being a vibrant hub for the performing arts.

I created a design where the hexagon not only frames the performer but also radiates outward, symbolizing the expansive impact of the arts. This visual metaphor of energy emanating from the focal point— the performer—aims to convey the life force and emotional resonance of the performances. I utilized a palette of bright, vibrant colors to underscore the diversity and vibrancy of the NAC’s programming, reflecting the Centre’s strategic goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

This design concept was applied across various platforms, including posters, digital banners, and promotional videos, ensuring a cohesive and impactful visual identity that invites audiences into the ‘house of dreams’ that is the NAC.

Various
performances

I developed unique visual identities for a wide array of performances, each tailored to resonate with its specific audience and thematic elements. My design strategy involved creating a versatile yet cohesive visual system that allowed each performance—from dynamic dance shows to intimate theatre productions—to have its own distinctive flair while maintaining aesthetic unity across all promotional materials.

Each design was meticulously crafted to highlight the key elements of the performance, particularly focusing on the performers themselves, using striking imagery to capture the essence of each show. I employed varying fonts, color schemes, and graphical treatments to align with the mood and energy of each event, ensuring that the visuals were not only eye-catching but also deeply reflective of the content and spirit of the performance.
